Over the last 35 years, AMA Homes has established a strong reputation for itself, winning several notable awards. In your opinion, what has been AMA Homes’ biggest achievement?

This I believe has been related to our dedication of consistent approach when considering the development opportunity, looking into the architectural grain of the area, knitting in a sustainable design that will merge with existing buildings and adds value to architectural and community infrastructure through its end use occupation.

Your portfolio consists of property developments in Edinburgh – why did you choose to focus on this region?

Edinburgh is rich with architectural heritage and when my brother and myself started our company, having just qualified as a young engineer and a chartered surveyor, we found this location to be an exciting playground to engage with and wanted to contribute to refining, preserving and developing appropriate schemes to enhance the city.

Do you have any plans to develop properties in other regions of Scotland or other parts of the UK?

We have been looking to do developments in other parts of Scotland, namely Glasgow, Perth, Dundee and along the Southern corridor of Edinburgh.

What has been the most challenging moment in your career so far?

The company has been through three recessions and the last financial crisis was the most challenging period.

Which of your past projects are you most proud of?

We are proud of all developments we’ve been involved with. We have a view that you only have one chance to deliver a well-designed and sustainable development because once a development is done, it becomes fragmented and divided into different ownerships and the opportunity for change / correction is gone for ever!

How do you differentiate yourself from other property developers in the market?

We have always been open minded about development opportunities and will tackle a variety of developments so long as the above criteria of adding value in terms of architectural master planning are met. We will look at residential, commercial, student residences, apart-hotel, mixed use schemes, listed buildings, and city and urban regeneration schemes.

What is your advice for budding entrepreneurs, particularly in the property sector?

Make sure that you have a good business plan, an appraisal that is properly put together, that you have done a decent amount of due diligence on the scheme you are intending to tackle, and that you have the knowledge and understanding around tackling this sector.

What has been the game-changing moment in your career so far?

Influences of political and financial changes

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
